Spanish Language Immersion in Antigua
Guatemala represents an intriguing mix and is a diverse country with landscape that ranges from lush tropical rainforest in the northern lowlands, where some of the most spectacular Mayan archaeological sites (including Tikal) are found, to the pineforested hills of the Highlands, which are home to Mayan communities that still wear their traditional weavings.
Guatemala has around 21 different ethnic groups, such as the Quichés, Mams, Tzutujils and Cakchiquels, speaking some 23 languages (21 of Mayan origin; the other two are Garifuna and Xinca).
Antigua, the former colonial capital, is saturated with the ruins of old convents and churches and surrounded by majestic volcanoes - some still active - that are good for hiking and climbing. The city's churches have lost much of their Baroque splendor, the post-earthquake repair and restoration leaving them denuded of embellishment and elegance.
However, many remain impressive, including La Merced, the Iglesia de San Francisco and the Las Capuchinas (now a museum). Casa K'ojom is a fascinating museum of Mayan music and ceremonies and related artifacts. On Sundays, visitors and locals alike gather to assess the goods for sale at the bustling market held in Parque Central, a most see.
Museums in Antigua, include the Book Museum/ Museo del Libro with Colonial & first edition books. The Colonial Art Museum/ Museo de Arte colonial, Art and architecture of the 16th and 17th centuries. Museo de Santiago/St. James Museum.
Apart from the many activities with a Mayan connection, the area outside of Antigua offers great hiking and climbing in the highlands and the volcanoes surrounding Lago de Atitlán and Antigua. Keep an eye out for the elusive national bird, the quetzal, when birdwatching around Tikal National Park or Lago de Atitlán.
Our Spanish language immersion allows you plenty of time to discover the culture & city of Antigua.
