Sucre is almost 10,000 feet high. It is best to allow yourself a day or two to acclimate upon arrival. Move slowly, rest, eat frequently, avoid heavy meals and alcohol, avoid smoking the first couple of days. Drink lots of fluids. Even if you are in excellent physical condition before arriving there is no guarantee that you will not be bothered by altitude sickness. Even individuals in great health feel short of breath in the beginning. It is safe to drink the mate of coca, which is offered against the effects of altitude. Take headache medication for same. Check with your doctor about taking acetazolamide. Bolivia lies in the Southern Hemisphere; winter runs from May to October and summer from November to April. The most important climatic factor to remember is that it's generally wet in the summer and dry in the winter. The city has a youthful, energetic feel despite its old-fashioned look created by the numerous ancient mansions and colonial churches. This charming colonial city and its nearby villages has a sizable Indigenous population who maintain their customs and colorful dress. Locals and visitors are attracted to the markets where food, textiles and other products are sold in barter fashion. Some of the most interesting sites include the Museo de Charcas, Museo del Arte Moderno (displays works of modern Bolivian painting and sculptures), Museo Textil Etnográfico (art exhibitions and workshops), Museo Antropológico (displays skulls, pottery, mummies from the eastern tribes of Bolivia), and located 10 km north of the city is Dinosaur Marks, showing dinosaur footprints as wells as prehistoric plant and animal fossils. Enjoy Spanish colonial churches, magnificent houses and many excellent museums. Local inhabitants love to spend their days sitting in the main plaza, walking through the numerous parks, or visiting with friends in the multitude of bars and cafes, so why not join them. Our Spanish language program also allows you plenty of time to discover the culture of Bolivia & Sucre
