TETOUAN MOROCCO - ARABIC IMMERSION

Class Schedule
Our group classes are designed to provide instruction over any duration from one week to a complete academic year. Students can choose to start their classes any Monday throughout the year.

The school is open from 9:00 am to 8:00 p.m. But the staff’s office hours are from 9:30 am-12:30 pm and from 3:30 pm-8:00 p.m.

Classes are held in small size groups five days a week, from Monday to Friday. Both our MSA and CMA courses consist of three levels of studies; each level is divided into three successive and progressive sublevels. Each sublevel is generally covered in three weeks. Students with prior knowledge of Arabic are expected to take an evaluation test in order to receive proper placement in the program.

You should bring a dictionary, notebooks and colored pens. It is useful to have 2 notebooks, one for new vocabulary, and one for the exercises in class. Textbooks and other teaching materials are provided, but it is advisable to have a good system of keeping your notes together.

What to Wear on your language vacation in Morocco
The strictest Islamic prescriptions require that a Muslim woman be completely covered except for her hands and face and that a Muslim man be covered from his navel to his knees. Most city-dwelling Moroccans are fairly tolerant in their attitudes and do not expect foreigners to adhere to local dress codes, which often vary dramatically from person to person anyway.

Men: Few Moroccan men do not wear shorts nor do they go bare-chested except at the beach. Foreigners who do this are usually tolerated but stick out like sore thumbs. For both men and women, modest and understated clothing is preferable in Fez.

Women: While there are Moroccan women who wear skin-tight jeans and low cut tops, this is not necessarily the model for female students. Moroccan women who dress in a "risqué" fashion are aware of what kind of response their attire will attract, and presumably know how to react, or not react, to provocation and cat calls from Moroccan men.

Female students are encouraged to dress in a way, which balances their need for comfort with a basic minimum of modesty to avoid attracting attention to themselves as objects of sexual desire. This does not mean they are expected to wear headscarves or long dresses, but they should avoid mini-skirts, tight pants, shorts, and low-cut tops. The bottom line is that women can often avoid unwanted attention by dressing modestly.

Activities & Excursions
Every week there are planned excursions to different tourist attractions and cultural places of interest around the area. For each excursion there is a tour guide who gives a thorough explanation of the site and a presentation to the students. Teachers give students an introduction to the site they will be visiting before the trip.

Some examples:
> Presentation of the history, Islamic architecture, culture and traditional arts of Tetouan, declared a World Cultural Heritage City by UNESCO in 1997
> Visits to the Medina of Tetouan
> Visits to Museums and historical monuments (Archeological Museum, School of Traditional Arts and Crafts, Ethnographic Museum, etc…)
> Lecture on Arabic Caligraphy
> Lecture on Islam
> Dinner and chat on Tetouani-Andalusian cuisine, musical concert in a traditional private house (optional: 15 euros)
> Moroccan films
> Lecture on the painters of the School of Tetouan by a tetouani painter
> Camel excursions in the desert (optional: 90 euros - departure from Marrakech). The package includes transportation and two nights at a hotel –half board)

cuisine, ceramics and music classes are also available.

Volunteering is another opportunity through which students can deepen their knowledge not only of the Moroccan culture but also of the economic and social aspects of the society. Students may choose to complement their language learning experience by volunteering at one of our partner NGOs.

On weekends, students can enjoy the city’s excellent beaches or its majestic mountains which spread eastwards along a distance of more than 500 kilometers. They can also choose to participate in the trips Dar Loughat organizes to cities such as Chefchaouen, Tangier, Asilah, Marrakech, Fez, and the fabulous Moroccan desert.

Booking this vacation is easy and we accept most major credit cards. We require a deposit of $300 and a completed booking form. After checking availability we normally confirm a booking within 24 hours.
