OKAZAKI CITY, JAPAN - JAPANESE IMMERSION

:: STANDARD (SILAC) JAPANESE COURSE OUTLINE

:: No previous study of Japanese is required for participation.

:: Our Standard program runs all year round with multiple start dates per year to select from.

:: You can study for 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11 or 12 weeks in duration.

:: Standard format classes start at 9.00am and finish at 2.30pm from Mondays to Thursdays. On Fridays the classes are from 9.00am to 11.50am

:: At beginner level, the main texts being used are the Minna no Nihongo series. Kanji knowledge is not a pre-requisite. At intermediate levels and above are not decided upon until after the faculty have completed proficiency testing at the start of each module. This is so that they can select texts that can match the strengths and weaknesses of the students, so it will depend very much upon the level and Kanji background of the students. The intermediate texts will require you to be able to read at least 300-350 Kanji.

Beginner Level: Main Text - Minna no Nihongo Series Book I & II
Pre-Intermediate and above: Main Text - Decided after placement testing: New Approach Series (Kiso / Kansei), Theme Betsu Joukyuu, Kokkyou wo koete, Joukyuunihongo. Grammar texts include Kanzen master ikkyuu / nikyuu.

:: Includes 23 classes per week plus an optional culture program as well as having a highly concentrated minimum of 6-9 proficiency levels between absolute beginner and intermediate level alone.

:: All classrooms and amenities are western style, with the desks arranged in a U shape to maximise student:teacher and student:student interaction. All have air-conditioning and heating.

:: This program allows students the opportunity to experience studying Japanese while living in Japan and practising in a full immersion environment. It offers the opportunity not only to study the language, but also to personally experience a wide range of cultural activities.

Minimum Entry Requirements:

All programs are academically oriented and students need to have a high level of motivation to learn Japanese as well as the necessary academic aptitude. Please note that if your only objective in Japan is to see the country then this is not the right school for you. As a serious language school you will be expected by both faculty and your peers to be conscientious in your studies. This is a school where study is required and progress is expected.

The minimum entry requirements differ slightly for each program, but the following base guidelines generally apply to all programs.

1) Academic Background: While most students have completed undergraduate and or postgraduate studies, a tertiary background is not set as a minimum entry requirement. The reason for this is that a small but not insignificant number of our students use the programs to gain entrance to Japanese universities or specialized training schools (for example design or animation). As the programs they enter include undergraduate studies, it does not make sense to include an undergraduate degree as an entry requirement.

2) Language Background: With the exception of certain programs such as the Advanced Japanese Studies Program, or Internship Program, prior knowledge of Japanese is not required. However it is usually helpful if you have some experience of studying Japanese or a foreign language before.

3) Aptitude: Applicants need to be able to prove that they have academic abilities equal to or higher than that of the average Japanese high school graduate. Proof of matriculation or college background is usually sufficient.

4) Documentation where required: All students must supply accurate information in the educational background section of the admissions application form and be prepared to submit supporting documentation if requested by our Admissions Office. If the program you are applying for requires that you obtain a student visa, then you must be able to prove that you have completed a minimum of 12 years of full-time education or have a diploma recognized to be the equivalent to a Japanese senior high school diploma and complete the student visa application kit as required.

5) Minimum Age Requirement: You must be 18 years of age or older
A high level of maturity and self-motivation is expected.

5) Guarantors: Citizens of certain countries will need to find guarantors. Please check the Visa Requirements section to see if this applies to you as no exceptions are made.
