SALVADOR BRAZIL - PORTUGUESE IMMERSION

Class Schedule
Classes start at 9 am and end at 12:30 pm with three 10-minutes-coffebreaks in between. Students who choose the Brazil Workshop PLUS-program will also have classes in the afternoon from 1:30 pm to 3:10 pm

All courses are taught with the books Falo Português 1 & 2 & 3. These books have been especially developed and designed by the school's team of teachers and cater to native speakers of all foreign languages. The interactive learning approach considers the students' reality during the course. The teaching material has been extremely well accepted by our previous students, because of their natural desire to work with a book shaped by their necessities. The students receive the textbook, as it is included in the price, on the first day of class.

In terms of the teaching method, there is an emphasis placed on conversation-training in class as well as the integration of intercultural activities. Lessons are taught in Portuguese only, carefully prepared for beginners and advanced students. In an agreeable way, games and other didactical means are used to develop listening and conversation skills which prepare the students for potential language confrontations. The teaching involves using original material like topical texts, up-to-date news from newspapers and magazines, modern literature and documentary reports.

Classes at our school are taught with an audio-visual method. That means that besides the written teaching material (books, newspapers and magazines),TV , video / DVD and tapes / CD's (music, phonetic exercises, dialogues and text) are also used.

Activities & Excursions
Every week there are planned excursions to different tourist attractions and cultural places of interest around the area. For each excursion there is a tour guide who gives a thorough explanation of the site and a presentation to the students. Teachers give students an introduction to the site they will be visiting before the trip.

Enjoy excursions to museums and sight seeing tours, festivals and ritual celebrations of candomblé, concerts, soccer games, bicycle tours in public parks, etc.

Twice a month: the school organizes meetings for foreign and Brazilian students to contact. This is a good opportunity to meet native Baianos, exchange experiences and make new friends. These meetings take place Friday nights. Fees for transport, food and beverages are not included.

Language exchange: We also offer the opportunity to take part in a free language exchange. There are many Brazilians here in Salvador who are learning English, German, French or Italian and would love the opportunity to meet regularly with a native speaker. Likewise, speaking with native Brazilians is an invaluable way to improve your Portuguese.

Enjoy a Dance class: Popular dance styles include Samba , Pagode , Forró, Lambada, Capoeira, Axé or Candomblé. Students receive two classes of one hour each week, for at least one week. Classes are held in the afternoon, so they don't interfere with the language courses, and consist of a theoretical and a practical aspect. A professional teacher gives a general introduction to different rhythms and dances, explaining history, tradition and development of Brazilian dance. Each group must have a minimum number of at least 3 students.

Enjoy a Music class: students learn how to sing Brazilian Popular Music - MPB, Bossa Nova, Samba, Forró, Native folk songs, indigenous songs, Capoeira, and other rhythms. Students will become familiar with the most important representatives of MPB and get to know famous participants of the " Afro Brazilian Street Carnival" in Salvador, in the " Carnival of Recife" ( Frevo, Maracatu ), as well as in the typical "Carnival of the Escolas de Samba" in Rio de Janeiro. Each group must have a minimum number of at least 3 students.

Enjoy a Cooking class: Students choose their favorite drink or dish, then with assistance from the teacher, they learn to prepare it. After that, they eat and drink, tasting a great variety of delicious, exotic new flavours! At the end of class, everybody participates in a gorgeous banquet. Classes are once a week from 3pm to 5pm. They consist of a theoretical and a practical section. Each group must have a minimum number of 3 students.

Enjoy a Capoeira class: Capoeira is an Brazilian fight-dance and martial art created by enslaved Africans during the 16th Century. Participants form a roda (circle) and take turns playing instruments, singing, and sparring in pairs in the centre of the circle. This acrobatic Brazilian martial art has strongly influenced modern break dancing. The music and rhythm are very exotic and if you should have the possibility to attend a "Capoeira" class, you will be impressed by some of the acrobatic jumps. Each group must have a minimum number of at least 4 students.

Booking this vacation is easy and we accept most major credit cards. We require a deposit of $300 and a completed booking form. After checking availability we normally confirm a booking within 24 hours.

Arrival airport: RIO/ SALVADOR

You will probably arrive into Rio de Janeiro-Galeão (Antonio Carlos Jobim International Airport) which is the main gateway into Brazil. Most students arrive in Rio and then catch a connecting flight to Salvador.
Website: www.infraero.gov.br

Salvador has a international airport (Deputado Luis Eduardo Magalhaes) and the big three domestic airlines all fly to Salvador, as does Nordeste, which goes to smaller cities in the region like Ilhéus and Porto Seguro. You can fly to most cities in Brazil from Salvador, but make sure you find out how many stops the plane makes: many flights in the Northeast operate as 'milk runs', stopping at every city along the Atlantic seaboard, which makes for a long ride. The Airport is located about 30km from the city.

Taxi (from the airport): This is the easiest and quickest but most expensive option, however we strongly recommend this option upon arrival. The fare is approx. $50R ($30-$35 US).

Bus (from the airport) A local bus departs approx. every 20 minutes to the city center but it does not run on a schedule. The fare cost is about $5 US.

Temperatures in Salvador for the whole year range through between 27º-29ºC maximum and 22º-24ºC minimum.

In the months from July to December the temperatures fall to the average of 21º/26ºC and there is more precipitation.

Even during the hot months of the Bahian summer the climate in Salvador is very agreeable because of the fresh breeze that blows from the sea.
