CUZCO CUSCO PERU - SPANISH IMMERSION

<<<< RETURN to main page (Cuzco Spanish Language vacation)

School Methodology
Our teaching method is based on 9 levels of the ACTFL model (American Association of Teachers of Foreign Language) that ranges from complete beginners to advanced levels. Classes will include lectures and interactive exercises including grammar, oral and written activities. Students must pass tests at each level in order to progress to the next. Teachers are rotated every week.

Maximum number of students per class: 4 students, average 2. Groups are organized in a way that they will always consist of students possessing the same level of Spanish. At the conclusion of your studies, you will receive a certificate of completion. No English should be used in class.

For Colleges and Universities our courses and credits are essentially the same as those granted in most Universities around the world. The amount of credit is based upon the number of contact hours, lectures, laboratory work, reading assignments, and required papers. All exams and papers of each student work are forwarded to the student college or university at the end of the students stay.

Class schedule
The very first day the host family takes the student to the school at 8:30am.

Every student will take the placement test (oral proficiency interview and grammar test) This has no other purpose than place the student on the right group and the right level. Students are also evaluated every week.

After the test, student depart with the Student coordinator, for the city tour, to the surroundings of the School and then to the colonial site. The city tour is practical and very interesting for the students because it has a lot of historical information and plenty of suggestion on what to do and see during their stay.

Students return to the school for the orientation session. The school director answer any questions students may have about the program, classes, host families, the city, etc. We then provide the student with the teaching material and a map of the city, marked with the location of the school and the host family.

The general schedule for the rest of the program is as follows:

08:30am - 10:30am: classes and lectures.
10:30am - 11:00am: coffee break.
11:00am - 13:00am: classes and lectures.

This will provide 20 classes of 60 minutes each. Teachers will also change each week so that students will have a significant variety of expertise within each week.

FIRST SESSION (8:30am to 10:30am)
This first session will be specifically dedicated to studying Grammar and to practicing Reading, Comprehension and Writing style.

GRAMMAR: Each student will study linguistic structures, grammatical functions and rules of Spanish. It has a very pragmatic approach in combination with a wide range of consolidation activities that are selected to reinforce the lesson of the day.

READING COMPREHENSION: The development of this skill will be carried out with real texts or didactically created ones that are coordinated to the lecture. With the help and guidance of the teacher, each student interpret the texts orally and in writing to further aid their comprehension. Orthographic rules, vocabulary and punctuation will also be reviewed.

SECOND SESSION (11:00am to 13:00pm)
This second session will be dedicated to studying oral comprehension and expression.

ORAL COMPREHENSION: The development of this skill will be carried out with real and didactically created documents that are designed to coordinate with the lecture. The student, with the help of the teacher and different comprehension activities, will then interpret the audio visual documents orally and/or in writing.

ORAL EXPRESSION: The student will participate interactively in a variety of different activities conducted by the teacher, such as presentations, debates, mini-plays, etc. These activities will be carried out with different materials proposed by the teacher or the students, depending on the everyone's necessities or interests. Spanish Phonetics (pronunciation, rhythm of the sentences and so on) will also be studied.

This new program is based upon cultural elements as well as the language itself, thus adding a valuable dimension of the Latin American Culture.

Activities & Excursions
Every week there are planned excursions to different tourist attractions and cultural places of interest around the area. For each excursion there is a tour guide who gives a thorough explanation of the site and a presentation to the students.

Machu Picchu you shouldn’t miss. During the trip you will see astonishing landscapes. Cuzco is the historical heart of the Inca culture.

Must see's are the nearby Inca ruins at Sacsayhuaman, Q'enko, Pucapucara and Tambomachay, as well as spending a day or two exploring the Sacred Valley of the Incas visiting the tradition market town of Pisac and the fascinating Inca fortress at Ollantaytambo.

The Inca Trail is Peru's best known hike, combining a stunning mix of Inca ruins, mountain scenery, lush cloud-forest and rich subtropical jungle. Over 250 species of orchid have been counted in the Machu Picchu Historic Sanctuary.

Hiking the Inca Trail
Essentially the Inca Trail is a mountainous jungle hike leading to the sacred Inca city of Machu Picchu. The 45km trek is usually covered in 4 days, arriving at Machu Picchu at daybreak on the final day before returning to Cusco by train in the afternoon.

The trek is possible for a reasonably fit person. Altitudes of 4200m will be reached, so ensuring that you are well acclimatized is important.

Over 160 trekking companies in Cusco were awarded licenses to operate the Inca Trail. Licenses are awarded only to registered Peruvian tour operators who have offices in Cusco so even if you buy your trek with a company in your own country the trek won't actually be operated by them. Prices for the Classic 4 day trek start at around US$430 per person (including entrance fees and return on train).

Booking this vacation is easy and we accept most major credit cards. We require a deposit of $300 and a completed booking form. After checking availability we normally confirm a booking within 24 hours.

Arrival airport: LIMA

You arrive into Lima's Intl airport.

Internal flights: to Cusco cannot be booked outside of Peru. Flight schedules and departure times change often and delays are common. We offer a Lima - Cusco transfer package, at an additional charge.

There's not much difference between the four seasons, however there is two specific times of the year: the Rainy Season from November to March and the Dry Season from April to October. Year round it is cold at night (30's to 40's) - No homes have heaters. High altitude! Day temp. ranges from high 60's to 70's. April to Sept is the coldest time day temp. high 60's & 30's at night.

Cusco is 3,310 meters/11,000 feet above sea level. It is best to allow yourself a day or two to acclimate upon arrival. Rest and avoid heavy meals and alcohol. Even if you are in excellent physical condition before arriving there is no guarantee that you will not be bothered by altitude sickness. Your first few days of acclimating could be a great chance to enjoy the cheap taxi fares in Cusco!

There is a medical station in the airport if arriving visitors have any immediate problems with the altitude. In Spanish altitude sickness is known as 'sorroche'. A common Peruvian natural cure is 'mate de coca', a tea made from boiling the leaves of the coca plant.
