MONTEVERDE COSTA RICA - SPANISH IMMERSION

Method
Our method emphasizes conversation and provides the students the opportunity to speak Spanish from their first moment in class. We tailor our programs to the academic goals of the student. The professors are open to teaching survival skills and grammatical structures which are most important to students.

Mastering difficult concepts is facilitated by the small class size (Average of 2 students, 4 maximum). The schools teaching methodology is based on daily conversations derived from the interests of the students. The conversations are guided by the professors and are supplemented by oral and written exercises as well as other activities in which the students can practice what they have learned.

Our programs are designed for students of different levels (beginner, intermediate, and advanced) with time periods of 2, 4, 6 or 8 weeks. The 4, 6, and 8 week programs are complete, structured course and are directed toward the specific needs of the students. The 2 week beginner program is a course in "survival" Spanish.

Each week students change professors in order to expose them to different expressions, vocabulary, accents and teaching styles.

Class schedule
Lessons normally start at 8:00 and you will be asked to take a test on your first Monday morning (unless you're a beginner), to establish your standard so that we can place you in the right class and level.

On the first day of class, we offer a student orientation designed to ease your transition into Costa Rican culture. During the orientation, we discuss many important subjects, such as what you can expect in your home stay, safety precautions, and how to use local transportation. We also discuss topics related to the school, including the services provided by the school and your daily schedule. The orientation supplements the orientation packet you will receive when you arrive.

For classes, you should bring a notebook and a Spanish/English dictionary. The school will provide you with a homework book, a vocabulary book, and various handouts on different grammar points. You might want to bring along your favorite grammar book (501 Spanish Verbs is a popular reference book.)

Activities & Excursions
Monteverde offers abundant opportunities for hiking, bird-watching, and exploring the local cloud forest reserves. Students can take horseback rides to see the sun set over the Nicoya golf, zip through the canopy of the cloud forest and take weekend trips to the Arenal Volcano or Manuel Antonio National Park. In addition, cultural events, such as live music, poetry reading, movie night and festivals, are organized regularly in Monteverde.
