Museo de filatelia de oaxaca
The Philately Museum is the first one of its kind in Mexico. This museum opens its doors enthusiastically to the public, especially to children and young people.
Temazcal bath and natural spas
This bath purifies your mind, body, and spirit in an extraordinary garden setting. Ancient ceremonies combine a cleansing
sweat bath with herbs and flowers. Music and a soothing massage will renew and energize you. The word Temazcal comes from the Nahuatl language used by the Aztecs: Temaz:bath and Calli: home.
The ceremony offered was used by the Aztecs, Zapotecs, Mixtecs, Mayans, and other indigenous groups as a therapeutic and purifying ritual. An adobe building set in an enchantingly beautiful garden holds the Temazcal bath chamber and an area for massage, meditation and rest afterwards.
The special bath chamber is centrally heated by rocks. When boughs of herbs are laid over the hot rocks, and the rocks are doused with water, a richly scented steam begins the sweating process necessary to relax and purify the body and to release toxins (spoken of by the indigenous practitioners as excess "hot" and "cold" energies). The bath is attended closely by the temazcalera who assures that the steam is not too hot or cold, and that the proper herbs are used to treat specific complaints.
Museums
In the city of Oaxaca there are a number of fine museums. The most outstanding is the Museum of the Cultures of Oaxaca, which houses valuable pieces of Mixtec and Zapotec origin. In Mexico City, the Rufino Tamayo Pre-Hispanic Art Museum displays an extensive collection of archaeological artefacts from the entire republic.
Excursions
Cloud walking in the sierra norte de oaxaca
The Sierra Norte or Sierra de Juarez is set in a uniquely privileged location; seven of the nine types of vegetation
existing in Mexico arefound here in nearly four thousand plant species.
This means that in the space of a few hours, it is possible to see ong ecosystems separated by thousands of miles in other parts of the world. This region boasts a diversity of fauna, with over four hundred bird and three hundred and fifty butterfly species.
The common land areas of Ixtlan are home to the six forest cat species found in Mexico, including the jaguar, and endangered animals such as the spider monkey and the tapir. The sierra is also the site of the mixed pine-oak forests classified by the World Wildlife Fund as being the richest and most varied on earth, and the Oreoamunia mexicana forest, one of the world’s oldest ecosystems, estimated to be over twenty million years old. The Zapotec communities call themselves “the cloud people”, a fitting description for the inhabitants of this mountain range.
Driven by the prevailing north winds, the clouds sweep across the Gulf of Mexico until they meet with the rugged sierra, instantly enveloping the mountain villages, perched 3,000 meters above sea level, in shrouds of mist. The scenery here is splendid and in some places, sublimely beautiful, and at this height, a journey along the mountain footpaths can literally become a walk among the clouds.
Beaches
The State of Oaxaca has a 342-mile (548 kilometre) coastline, along the Mexican Pacific, divided between the Jamiltepec, Pochutla, and Juchitan districts. The Oaxacan coastline offers an array of natural beauty beyond compare, with its
panoramic scenic views and the extraordinarily peaceful waters of its bays. It offers a delightful, tropical climate with an annual temperature of 82°F (28°C), and beautiful sunny days.
Oaxacan beaches have fine, white sand. Its topography favours privacy and tranquillity, enhanced by its beautiful aquamarine waters and breathtaking sunsets. Some of the most attractive are: Zicatela, which is ideal for surfing; Escobilla, a natural reproduction centre for turtles; Mazunte and San
Agustinillo, with a live species museum that has become the "Campesino" (peasant's) natural reserve; Zipolite, a nude beach, like very few in the world, and Puerto Angel and Puerto Escondido, two bays with truly Oaxacan environment.
